The Internal Affairs Unit is charged with the responsibility of conducting all internal investigations within the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. The unit ensures that the New Jersey Attorney General’s Internal Affairs Policy and Procedures are followed by all of the law enforcement agencies within the county. The unit also oversees all internal affairs investigations from each of the county’s municipal police departments, university police departments and the county Sheriff’s Office. All law enforcement agencies in Mercer County maintain separate and distinct Internal Affairs sections. All complaints against officers are made to their department through that section.
The Internal Affairs Unit investigates all incidents of weapon discharges by police as well as all police pursuits that result in injuries to vehicle operators or bystanders. In addition, the unit conducts police policy and procedure reviews of each of the police departments within the county and regularly provides training relative to internal affairs to the departments. Additionally, the unit works cooperatively with local internal affairs officers and conducts independent investigations countywide.
